The Washington Post, January 11, 1994
Klezmos...brings a fresh approach to the field with its emphasis on the
European origins of klezmer music.
...Klezmos emphasized the energy and beauty of klezmer rather than ethnic
nostalgia--and they weren't above throwing in an Italian tarantella, an
old-timey fiddle tune or a Mickey Katz comedy routine. The focus, though,
was on traditional klezmer repertoire--the fast and flashy freylekhs , the
slow and somber horas and midtempo wedding songs. Pianist Marc Glickman,
accordionist Wendy Morrison and double bassist Ralph Gordon churned up the
pulsing rhythms, while clarinetist Jonah Blaustein and fiddler (Alexander)
Mitchell intertwined melodic lines above the beat. When it all clicked,
especially on the instrumentals, the effect conjured a Celtic Dixieland
band playing Balkan dance tunes.
