Photo Essay: How to Secure the Basses
You can see how the damage could have been avoided by wedging cardboard in the space as shown. On some accordions, this space is almost impossible to get to, so you have to use an alternate bracing method: put a thin piece of clean, flexible foam sponge, cut to size, directly over the exposed rods and pipes, then put the cover on over it. (Don't under any circumstances use hard poly foam molding, styrofoam, or anything crumbly.) The pipes are held in place by the sponge, so that the mechanism cannot easily be damaged. With this method of bracing, the buttons can still be depressed, although not as easily. You must notify the person on the other end that you have secured the basses, and provide instructions for freeing them, or else they will think the accordion is defective.
