Photo Essay: How to Secure the BassesOn this particular accordion, the 4 screws that are holding on the bass mechanism cover are doing double duty, also holding on the 4 bass feet. This is atypical. On most accordions, the screws holding on the bass cover are separate from the feet, in which case it is unnecessary to remove the feet in order to remove the cover. Every accordion has, or should have, these 4 feet to protect the bottom of the accordion, the bass strap, and the air button when the accordion is "sitting down".Before you remove the bass cover screws, you need to completely loosen the bass strap on one end. You do this by rotating the adjusting wheel, shown at left in the picture. If the accordion is properly positioned, with the bass buttons (not visible in photo) facing the table, the direction you spin the wheel is upwards. In this photo, the bass strap has been completely loosened, and we are ready to loosen the screws.
