Photo Essay: How to Secure the Basses

It appears as if each button is an integral part of its rod, which is not the case with accordions that have metal button rods. This would mean that if a button becomes damaged, in order to replace that button you would have to replace the entire rod.

Each one of these button rods connects via a complicated mechanism to several bass reeds. When the button is depressed, it opens the valves that allow air into the reed chambers, which causes the reeds to sound. You can see that, with the buttons in their current position, many reeds are sounding all the time. Sometimes you can coax the buttons back into their holes.
