Photo Essay: How to Secure the Basses
Usually I would attempt this operation with a bass rod bending tool. When this kind of damage happens to metal rods, it is often the case that they have been bent out of shape. However, here I am not trying to bend the rod, but just coax it, with its button, back into position. Often it is a simple matter of nudging a pipe back into place underneath (from this perspective, on top of) its rod pin. You can easily identify which ones are out of place by looking at the ends of the rods poking through the bottom of the stop rail, at the opposite end of the rod from the button. A rod that is sticking up higher than its neighbors is probably caught on the wrong side of a pipe.
