Klezmos plays Klezmer, the traditional instrumental music of the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe of the last three centuries, along with an eclectic assortment of songs and tunes from other closely and not-so-closely related cultures. The band is also fully conversant with Israeli dance music and jazz standards of the Swing era.
Klezmos performs at concerts, festivals, weddings, bar mitzvahs, dances and parties throughout the Washington, DC area. We are experts at creating a freylach (joyful) atmosphere. We can also teach and lead some easy Yiddish and Israeli dances when the program calls for dancing.
The core of the band was assembled in 1990 by Wendy and Marc. All of the members of Klezmos are well-known in the Mid-Atlantic traditional music scene as performers in a broad range of styles, particularly traditional dance music, including Appalachian, Celtic, New England, French Canadian, English, Scandinavian, Jazz, Swing and more. All these influences find their way into the band's repertoire, allowing Klezmos to discreetly mix idioms, adding a Breton or Balkan tune to a Klezmer medley, or playing a Jewish freylekhs for a New England contra dance.
